Incorporating multi-media: video, audio, animations

Some ideas for incorporating multimedia into your platform use:

  • Use the video tool to record performances of poems, scripts etc. and have children make comments on each other’s work.
  • Insert an RSS feed can be set up by adding RSS feeds to the 'available panels' drop-down on in the page design view. View the RSS Feeds Help Page for advice on this.
  • Children use a microphone to record themselves reading, perhaps a couple of times a half term, uploading the file to their ‘mywork’ space. They will then be able to compare themselves over time.
  • Have the children create animations (Google ‘pivot stick’ or ‘anithings’ to find some good animation software) and embed into blogs and forums to discuss and comment on.
  • Take a video of a hot-seating activity. Children make comments on how they think it went.
  • Take photos of freeze-frames. Children comment on, assess and discuss the freeze frames. This could be the basis of further written work, for example a blog from the point-of-view of one of the characters in the freeze frame.
  • Embed 3rd party content and videos into your page and set questions related to the content. Please visit our Content Help Page for further information on how to do this.

Some popular free content providers:

Voki

Voki lets you create animated characters and make them speak. You can even add your own voice recordings to the character. One idea is to have your Voki read instructions to the children and introduce topics on the class homepage. It is also ideal for not yet confident readers who can hear instructions as well as try to read them.

Animoto

  • Animoto is a fantastic website that produces beautifully crafted videos from your photos, clips and music. The free version allows you to produce 30-second videos and is very easy to use. The videos produced can be embedded by pasting the ‘embed’ code into ‘source’ box of the advanced editor.

It could be used, for example, for displaying slideshows of work, events at school or school trips.

Photo Peach

  • Photo Peach is a similar site, where you can produce 'spiral' or 'storyboard' type slideshows that can easily be embedded into your pages.

Class Tools

  • Class Tools is a great free web site that allows you to create free educational games, activities and diagrams in flash. An animated book, for example, allows students to type in their own text in a book format complete with turning pages. The picture below shows the random name picker fruit machine - an ideal way for a teacher to choose students during group activities or even to add excitement to a question time session!

Wordle

  • Use Wordle to create a word cloud. This should stimulate the children to start thinking about words related to the topic. Perhaps they could add some words of their own in a 'contribution' area beneath the picture.

Magic Widgets

  • At Magic Widgets you can create and personalise 'widgets' such as scrolling welcome banners, clocks and photo cubes. The widgets produced can be embedded by pasting the ‘embed’ code into ‘source’ box of the advanced editor.

Storynory

  • Storynory is an excellent site containing a host of audio stories for children. On it you will find a fantastic mixture of stories, fairy tales and specially adapted myths and histories. They are ideal for Primary School students. You can include a link to the website by clicking on the link icon in page design view.
