Quick Start Guide to DB Primary: preparation for the classroom

This is a simple checklist to get you up and running with the platform. Most of the steps below are explained in detail in this wiki – so don’t worry if you’re not sure exactly how to do everything!

I’ve got my new platform – what do I do next?

  • Bulk create the new users via a Spreadsheet or CSV (run this at the end of the day). You can create users for:
  • Staff
  • Children
  • School governors and PTA
  • Create a link to it from the school website, or the network.
  • It is just a web address, which can be added by your website administrator.
  • You can create a shortcut from your network by right-clicking, choosing “New -> Shortcut” and typing in the web address.
  • Create a Staffroom community, and add the teachers as members. This community can be used for staff to discuss their use of the platform, and ask questions to other staff, to share notes for the day, diary dates, policies, and letters. Blank planning formats could be uploaded as well as general school resources. For detailed information on setting up a community, please take a look at the Community_Admin Help Page.

Once these actions have been performed the platform is ready for use. It won’t be much fun for the children yet, as the key to running DB Primary successfully is in the creation of communities. Communities allow groups of users to communicate and collaborate with very little effort from the teacher.

What communities should I set up?

  • One for each class.
  • One for each year group.
  • More for clubs, governors, PTA, house teams and any other group that may benefit, for example:
  • School trip communities – especially useful for longer trips to keep parents and carers before and during the trip.
  • A student council group. If you make members of the council leaders of the group, they can create their own forum discussions, create their own quizzes, add calendar events and edit the front page of the community as they wish. The group could be opened up to the wider school. For example, in anti-bullying week, council members may want to create discussions on how best to stop bullying.

What should I put in communities?

It is a good idea to give an introduction to what each community is about. To do this you can create a custom page for the community and add any text and pictures you want. The communities can also be used for the following:

  • Sharing files through the gallery.
  • Group discussions via the forums.
  • A store for any quizzes relevant to the group.
  • Notification of events via a calendar.
